As if the struggles that occur when you have an autistic child aren't enough, getting and paying for the therapies needed can totally devastate even the best budgeting.
In 2008, the average American families income was around $44,000 a year. The cost of a years worth of therapy could easily exceed $70,000. 2010 shows no difference. If anything, average income is down and the cost of therapy is higher.
Now there are insurance programs, school programs and public outreach programs that can help a family with the costs, but many times these therapies are not implemented by highly and extensively trained persons who focus just on autism.
OBAMACARE
What do we know about autism treatment? It is expensive. Young children need 20-25 hours a week of intense intervention. In California, Blue Cross went up 38% recently. Probably due in part to the explosion in numbers diagnosed with autism.
If the government takes over the health care industry it is my opinion that there will be rationing. At least that is what happens where ever there is government run health care.
As of this post, I have YET to find any assistance to families with autistic children. Once again, the Elected Heros have failed to provide a solution to our struggles.

Vocal Analysis Can Help with Early Autism Diagnosis

Now a new study in the Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences has shown that analyzing the unique signature of children's pre-speech vocalizations can be a pretty good way to identify potential cases of autism.
This is done using a fairly simple voice recorder called LENA that kids wear in their clothing for all day recording. The data is then uploaded to a central server where it is analyzed for specific vocal signatures. Interestingly, although the study was conducted on American kids, the same software should be able to work with kids from other languages and cultures.

Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids are the "good fats" all over the news these days, and a very hot research topic. More is known about them every week as more studies come forward. Some information hasn't changed since Julius Fast wrote his book The Omega-3 Breakthrough (Tucson, Arizona: The Body Press 1987, ISBN 0-89586-625-0). For example, good fats compete with bad fats, so it's important to minimize the intake of trans fats and cholesterol (animal fat) while consuming enough good fats. Failed to access IIS metabase ERROR
Got to be one of the most fustrating errors to get after you have spent over a week developing a ASP.NET (2.0) web applications. So I searched the greatness that is the internet and found many a fix... sorry, little sarcasm there...
Turns out, installing IIS on an XP sp3 Pro computer AFTER you have been developing is a BAD THING! I read and read and figured after 5 sites, maybe I need to basically start over. THANK YOU Amit S Patriwala! His blog post was the answer to my issue. I will recap...
If you get this error, follow the steps below:

- Stop panicing
- Run the following in a CMD window: C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -ua This uninstalla ALL ASP.NET framework.
- Run C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe –ga ASPNET next. This tells you what the rights are for the ASPNET user.
- Next, run C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -iru This is what fixed my issue!
- Run C:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe –ga ASPNET to verify

Genetic markers for autism
The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that a Canadian lead researchers have found genetic markers for autism.
This could be a major break trough if it is accurate.
For so long, we in the Autism community have wonders and speculated what is causing this in our children. We suspected everything from mercury in immunization shots to heredity. Lets hope they have found something.

Your Windows XP running slow?
If you are like me, when the computer starts running slow, you just want to "send it out the Window!" Well, thanks to my friends at TechRepublic.com I just might be able to assist on this issue.
Lets start with the pagefile. The pagefile is, for all pratical purposes, more memory. Ok, not MORE, just additional. Trust me there is a difference! RAM, or memory, is/should be REALLY fast, the pagefile is a space on the hard drive where Windows will put stuff when you aren't accessing it as much.
Like all programs, the pagefile can befome fragmented. And like all programs, this leads to SLOWNESS!
For those of you who know me, I defrag my hard drives at the least every two days. A messy drive leads to a messy mind! On most XP (Windows in general) machines, the pagefile is set to a system managed size. This allows the operating system to expand the pagefile as needed. This can cause the pagefile to fragment and we know what that means! Windows comes with a built in defragmentor, dfrg.msc. You can run it from the command line (Start / Run / dfrg.msc) or you can right click My Computer, Left click Manage, select Storage and there it IS!
Click on Analyze and XP will check out the drive. When it is done, you get a results popup. Click on View Report and you will get:
1) A little about your drive.
2) A list of those files that are fragmented.
Scroll down the Volume Information window and you will find the Pagefile Fragmentation. This morning, mine is PERFECT! 2.00GB - only 1 fragment. You can not defrag the pagefile while it is in use so, you have a couple of options here, DiskKeeper or temporarily move the page file to another location.
To remove and recreate the page file, follow these steps:
Now you have NO page file. Before you re-create the pagefile, I recommend that you defragment the C drive. You can use the built in defragmenter (dfrg.msc) or use any one of a dozen or more aftermarket defragmenters. Now, unless you want to slow the process, leave the computer to it's defragmentation. Yeah, LEAVE! If you are opening programs, saving documents, etc, you will slow down the process. Once you get the drive defragmented, running it once a week will keep you in tip-top shape and up to speed!
Windows isn't the only defragmentor out there. There are the paid ones like Disk Keeper. Great program if you are in charge of an office. Home users, might want to use Disk Keeper Lite or Disk Keeper Home Edition. As for me? I use Defraggler from Piriform. It is FREE, easy to use and you can schedule your defrags.
Now, we need to put the pagefile back. Go back to the above list and when you get to #9, you have a couple options. You can select a Minimum and Maximum size (I recommend the following: Minimum = Physical Memory Size, Maximum = 2.5 * Physical Memory) or the System managed size. I suggest the System managed size option for most users. Select it, press SET, and be ready for a reboot!
Ah, your XP is up and running at full speed! Run the defrag analystic tool once a month, keeping an eye on the pagefile (and disk) fragmentation. Defrag your hard drive(s) as needed and when your pagefile gets a "messy", following the above steps will clean it right back up!

Autism and Vaccines
As of this post, there still is no proven link to Autism and the MMR vaccine. That being said, there are many well-meaning parents refusing to get their children vaccinated. This is resulting in cases of measles and mumps increasing.
Did you know that worldwide, there are an estimated 10 MILLION cases of measles with 164,000 deaths each year (CDC) ? Thankfully, the illness can be prevented by a vaccination. Unfortunately, the unproven link between Autism and the MMR vaccine has many parents refusing to get their children immunized.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) states that after four independent studies have been unable to find any link between Autism and the MMR vaccine. The link was originally believe due to the appearance of austic signs or symptoms and when children get the MMR vaccine. The Institute of Medicine also concluded that there is no link between Autism and thimersol, a preservative, used in some vaccines.

Learning by Scanning
Finding out more about Autism
Researchers are taking scans of sleeping children, discovering what occurs in the brains of babies and young children with autism. Using what is called fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, researchers from the University of California, San Diego peer at images of the children’s brains. Research shows that when hearing bedtime stories, autistic children as young as 14 months use different brain regions than youngsters with more typical development. There has been research that shows that a gene mutation of the brain called SHANK3 can cause a severely delayed, or even absent, language abilities, intellectual disabilities and autism. SHANK3 was mutated by Mount Sinai School of Medicine and injected into mice. The researchers noticed that there was a lapse in communication between nerve cells in the brain. The breakdown indicates that the nerves were not maturing properly.
The researchers then used a derivative of an insulin-like growth factor-1 {IGF1} and observed an improvement in the communication of the nerve cells in the brain. After only two weeks of treatment, nerve cell communication and adaptation of nerve cells to stimulation was restored.
"The result of IGF1 treatment of these mice is an exciting development on the road to ultimate therapies for individuals with PMS," said Joseph Buxbaum, PhD, Director of the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "If these data are further verified in additional preclinical studies, individuals with a SHANK3 mutation may benefit from treatments with compounds like this one."
The team at the Seaver Autism Center, lead by Dr. Buxbaum will continue to evaluate the efficacy of IGF1 in mice. Evaluation of the effects on neuroanatomical changes will be done by Patrick Hof, MD, Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Leading the study of the behavioral changes in the mice is Jacqueline Crawley, PhD, Senior Investigator at the National Institutes of Health.
As a friend of families who are coping with autism, this is VERY exciting news! Will it cure all spectrums of autism? We can only pray.

Infertility Treatments and Autism
When a child is diagnosed with Autism, parents speed many a sleepless night wondering what caused it. Could it be heredity, chemicals in the immunizations, toxic exposure during pregnancy, age of the parents?? Always more questions than answers.
A team from the Harvard School of Public Health did a study and found that autism was nearly twice as common when the mother was treated with the ovulation-inducing drug Clomid (as well as others like it) verses mothers who did not take these types of drugs. The team presented the study Wednesday, 5/16/2010, at the International Meeting for Autism Research held in Philadelphia. The link even persisted after taking into account the women’s age.
The longer women were being treated for infertility, the higher the chances of the child having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This shows, at the very least, an association to the drugs and ASD.
An Israeli team found a link between vitro fertilization and autism. Again, a drug that stimulates ovulation is used. Put these two studies together and treatments for infertility could play a role in the cause of autism. But as always, more questions than answers.
In the Harvard study, 3,985 women were questioned, 111 reported having a child with ASD. Now the questions arise; Was it a premature birth? Were there multiple births (twins, triplets)? Did the child have a low birth weight?
Even I have a question… What about those autistic children whose mother didn’t have any of these drugs or vitro fertilization?
My wife had none of these treatments and our 18yr son not only has ADHD, but a mild ASD. My good friend’s son has a more sever ASD, and the mother was not on these drugs or vitro fertilization.
Are we reaching here? I understand we need to find a cause for ASD but what if it is a combination of a combination of drugs, toxic exposure, age, environmental, diet, and heredity.
As a society, we take drugs for just about everything, from bi-polar depression to sleepless nights. We consume various energies at alarming rates causing us to release toxins by the ton every second. With the drive to have a career before family, couples are starting later in life. Almost everything we eat has some type of preservative in it. I would bet over 70% of people, in the US, don’t eat the way they should, I know I don’t! Then there is the heredity question, could autism be a dormant gene? So many questions, so few answers…
The Autism Resource Foundation was founded in 2007 as a resource reaching out to families coping with autism. Our founder, Anthony Hale, is also a father of an autistic child. In the face of adversity people are able to accomplish things they never thought would be possible. We are all in this together and only together can we overcome the hold that autism has on our loved ones. Embrace this journey we are on together.
The Autism Resource Foundation strongly believes that it all begins with the parents. Parents are and must be the driving force of our communities. The risks are too great and the issues too sacred to leave in the hands of those with outside interests.

Autism - Symptoms
It is estimated that between 1 in 500 and 1 in 166 children will be diagnosed with Autism. Males have a four times more likely hood of having Autism than females.
How do you know if your child has Autism? Well, honestly, sometimes it is not as easy as going to see a doctor and getting diagnosed. Mild forms of Autism can sometimes go completely unnoticed and undiagnosed. The first signs are often seen with in the first three years of development. The list below can assist you as in to what to look for. Please note, this is not a definitive list, but instead more of a tool to assist you. If you think your family member has Autism, PLEASE get them to your doctor or pediatrician.
Social interactions:
• Problems developing nonverbal communication skills. This includes eye-to-eye gazing, facial expressions, posture and touching.
• Unable to establish same age friendships
• Lack of or no interest in sharing emotionally with others.
• Unable to understand another person’s pain or sorrow, a complete or partial lack of empathy.
Communication:
• Lack of or delay in learning to speak.
• Repetitive use of a word or sentence.
• Unable to understand what is being said to them.
• Unable to start a conversation with others.
• Unable to continue a conversation started with them.
Activities and Play:
• Absolute need for a routine.
• Preoccupation with certain topics. A great example is an adolescent consumed by basketball trading cards.
• Unable to focus on the entire object or toy. Knobs or wheels are the focus not the entire toy.
• Physical behaviors included (but certainly not limited to) constant rocking, hand flapping, jumping.
Once again, this is not a definitive list, I honestly don't think there is one. Use it and everything you find as a reference. We are all in this together, lets pray for a cure.
